Creative Arcade Maternity Session in St. Paul
It’s not every day that I find myself in a retro arcade with a couple for a maternity session. While I love frolicking through a wide-open field of wildflowers, or strolling through the mountains, I love when a couple adds their own personal twist to their photos. So when Dani and JD inquired about maternity photos and tasked me with finding a unique location, I was thrilled to bring them to CanCan Wonderland. Their creative arcade maternity session in St. Paul was such a fun way to celebrate the much anticipated arrival of their little girl.

There’s something so heartwarming about photographing someone who you’ve known through a multitude of seasons in life. Dani is no exception; we’ve actually known each other since high school! I had the sweet honor of photographing Dani and JD’s engagement session in Blue Mound State Park in 2019. It was so beautiful getting to just witness her with her person, so incredibly in love. Dani and JD had a destination wedding in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in 2021, where Chuck and I got to ring in the new year alongside their closest people.
Now, all these years later, photographing Dani and JD’s maternity photos. Spoiler alert: their sweet baby girl is already here and she is every bit as perfect as you could imagine! I just know she’ll grow up to be as smart and strong willed as her mama, and as patient and kind as her daddio. Ugh, my heart is far too fragile sometimes!
But, let’s rewind a bit to this creative maternity session! Like I mentioned, Dani challenged me with coming up with fun, unique idea for their maternity session. When I started brainstorming locations, I knew I really had to pull off something that would match Dani and JD’s vibe. Luckily, Chuck and I have spent many days hanging around Dani and JD to tune into their personalities and vibes. On more than one occasion, their competitive sides have come out (as well as their immense love of golf).
Unique Maternity Session Ideas
That’s when it came to me — the CanCan Wonderland amusement center in St. Paul! I had only been to this quirky place just once, but remember the unique character and touches present in every square inch. But the real selling point was the mini golf course! Each hole was designed by a different Minnesota local artist. CanCan Wonderland was shaping up to be such a fun space for these parents-to-be to let loose before adding a 3rd member to their crew.
Tagging along with Dani and JD for their creative arcade maternity session in St. Paul was a blast. The ballin’ arcade games were a huge hit, with the true competitive sides of these two coming through! It was just such a fun environment to witness these two feel like just two kids in love…
