Colorado Springs Cozy mountain engagement photos

A cozy mountain engagement session in late Winter near Colorado Springs

I don’t quite know how to explain it, but high school sweethearts have a special place in my heart. I don’t know if it’s the whole “growing up together” thing or what… but I can’t get past just how sweet it is. So keep that in the back of your mind as you swoon over these Colorado Springs cozy mountain engagement photos of Elaine and Jordan.

Will I ever stop calling myself a “new resident” to Colorado? Probably not. But I’ll save my spiel here in hopes that it’ll make me sound like a native! I first met Elaine while we were both coaching at Colorado Juniors Volleyball. If you’re an avid reader of the blog, you’ll know that I met another one of my dear friends while coaching with CJV, too! When Elaine and I first got to chatting, I learned that she was recently engaged to her high school sweetheart. However, they had not yet found a photographer at the time! You bet your bottom dollar that I did my best to put on the charm and let her know that I happened to be a photographer. My pitch must’ve been pretty alright since it wasn’t too long until we had a plan in motion.

The biggest thing Elaine and Jordan wanted for their Colorado Springs engagement photos was a wide open field with picturesque mountain views. To say that Central Colorado is just bursting with epic views would be an understatement! As a wedding and elopement photographer, I am a frequent Google Earth user to help me virtually scout locations before visiting a place in person. I perused the Colorado Springs area on Google Earth for a bit before stumbling upon the Spruce Mountain Open Space Trail. I mean, “open space” is literally in the name; talk about pure kismet!

When we first arrived to the trail, Jordan made it pretty known that he wasn’t thrilled to be having pictures taken (as much as he loves his gal). I’m no stranger to reluctant partners; it’s a little super power of mine though to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Most couples haven’t had much experience having photos taken professionally. In fact, the last time Elaine or Jordan were in front of the camera was for their senior portraits!

Besides capturing sweet little moments of my couples, my job as a photographer is to keep the nerves at bay, and lean into the awkwardness. Hear me out; there’s something so authentic and beautiful about capturing those deep belly laughs, stolen kisses between prompts, and little smirks. When it came to documenting Elaine and Jordan’s cozy mountain engagement session, they were seriously naturals. Had I not known how Jordan was feeling leading up to the session, I would’ve thought he had done this a few times! The secret to capturing those effortlessly soft kisses and scrunchy noses is to plan your engagement session like a date. While I definitely like to give my couples prompts, I primarily like to keep them moving and be a fly on the wall.

It’s safe to say: not an awkward bone was in sight from this Colorado Springs cozy mountain engagement session. Between the golden sunshine dipping below the Cheyenne Mountains, the residual snow blanketing portions of the open fields and mountain tops, these lovers truly warmed my heart. Be sure to follow along with my biz over on the ‘Gram to be the first to sneak a peek at my latest musings (@chuckandshiloh). From wedding and elopement recaps to little love stories, and everything in between… I’m so glad you’re here.
